A fugitive from a federal prison is living in the United States after spending more than a decade in prison in a Florida prison where he is wanted for the shooting death of an inmate, authorities said Thursday.
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Joseph E. Anderson, 46, was taken into custody on Thursday in Fort Myers, Florida, after he escaped from a jail in nearby Monroe.
Authorities said Anderson was wanted on charges including attempted murder and aggravated assault in connection with the shooting that took place on Oct. 20, 2016.
Anderson was serving time at the Florida Department of Corrections in Monroe, when he allegedly shot and wounded a corrections officer who was investigating a complaint of a domestic disturbance in the area, authorities have said.
Anderson is also wanted on a warrant for a crime that occurred in Orange County in April 2018, authorities in Orange said.
He is a former prison guard who was arrested in January 2020, authorities confirmed.
Anderson remains at large and has not yet been formally charged.
