Veteran artist who helped inspire ‘Snow Informed Teaching’ on a Snowy day, now teaching at a veterans center

Former music teacher Kristi Stansfield spent years on the front lines of the Iraq War and helped develop a system of informed teaching that helped many of the country’s veterans through their traumatic experience.

The Snowed In singer and songwriter wrote the songs that became a landmark anthem for those veterans, including “I Don’t Like It,” which is now being played at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Atlanta, Georgia.

The song was featured on the HBO series “The Wire” and has since been recorded by a group of artists, including New Orleans rapper B.o.

B, Atlanta singer-songwriter Daz Dillinger, and the National Guard’s Special Operations Unit (SOU).

“The song has changed the way that people talk to veterans and have a better understanding of what they’re going through,” Stansfields told Newsweek.

“It’s like a bridge to healing for people who may not be able to talk to someone that they really know.”

Stansfloeson was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, and had been on medication for depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

After her diagnosis, she was given a deferment for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

After returning home, she began teaching veterans through a Snowed in-service education program, where she learned about how to read music.

“The SnowedIn taught me how to listen to music in a way that they wouldn’t have been able to,” Stensfield said.

“I realized that I could give them the tools to listen and be able be present in their environment and be a part of what was going on.”

For Stansford, who was a military officer in Iraq in 2005, the experience was invaluable.

“What the Snowedin taught me was how to be in the moment,” she said.

“‘I’m not just sitting there, I’m here.

I’m alive.'”

As part of the SnowEDT program, Stansfons work with veterans who have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury.

“As you can imagine, we had so many veterans come in and get into the program,” Stonsfield said, adding that some veterans had PTSD.

“One of the most memorable things that they shared with me was, ‘I’m really upset because I think I am a bad person, I hate my country.

I just don’t want to die.’

That was really inspiring to me.”

Stanfield was diagnosed in 2018 with Stage 4 breast cancer, but was able to stay in the program because she was able in part because of her cancer treatment.

“There are so many of these veterans who are in treatment for PTSD, but the SnowEdT program gave them the tool to really have their voices heard and be part of this conversation,” she told Newsweek, “and it was really important to them.”

Stensfields experience was not unique.

“Every day I get emails from people saying that the Snow EdT program has changed their lives,” she added.

“That they’ve changed who they are and what they want to do with their lives.”

Stanners family is one of several to receive the SnowEted honor.

“They have been in a very difficult place, and they’ve had a lot of tough moments,” Stancos told Newsweek in 2018.

“But I’m glad that I’m in the process of healing from this because it’s given me a lot to think about, and to be thankful for.”

Stancys daughter, Kayla Stansfort, who is also a veteran, was diagnosed three years ago with cancer and is now in remission.

She was also a SnowEDt participant, and says she was a key figure in the snowed in program.

“Kristi’s an inspiration, because she really put all of the work into being a part [of the program],” Kayla said.

Stansforts daughter, Lauren Stansstef, is also in remission after undergoing treatment for post-treatment anxiety and PTSD.

Stainsfield said she also learned a lot from Stansrafes daughter.

“When you talk about her, she really made you feel like a part to yourself, like you were doing something meaningful for yourself,” she recalled.

“She really took you in and really helped you be yourself, which is really important for a parent.”

“The snowedin gave her a chance to get away from the war and reconnect with her family, which was really powerful,” Stanesfield said of Kayla.

“You’re not alone.

You’re not just doing it on your own, but you’re a part and you’re not only a part, but they’re a community.

It really opened her eyes up and gave her the courage to come back.”
